5 Months

In the fifth month of pregnancy, the baby experiences a rapid growth phase, becoming significantly more active as muscles strengthen and coordination improves. The baby now has established sleep-wake cycles and begins to move more noticeably, making it likely that you’ll start feeling these movements, sometimes described as flutters or gentle kicks. This marks a memorable milestone for many expectant parents, as it brings a new level of connection with the baby.

Internally, the baby’s organs are continuing to mature. Fat is beginning to accumulate beneath the skin, which will help regulate body temperature after birth. Externally, body hair known as lanugo starts to grow, providing a layer of insulation. Additionally, a waxy coating called vernix forms on the skin. This protective layer prevents the baby’s delicate skin from prolonged exposure to the amniotic fluid, acting as a shield to keep the skin smooth and less susceptible to abrasions.

Fingernails now reach the tips of the fingers, showing just how detailed the baby’s growth has become. The tonsils are also fully formed, and tiny milk teeth buds are developing beneath the gums, setting the stage for teething in the future. Another significant development during this month is the functionality of the gall bladder, which begins to produce bile essential for digestion. This preparation will help the baby’s digestive system function effectively after birth.

By the end of this month, the baby has grown considerably, reaching approximately 8 to 12 inches in length and weighing between half a pound and one pound. This progress reflects the tremendous changes occurring as the baby continues to develop in preparation for life outside the womb.
