7 Months

During the seventh month of pregnancy, the baby reaches an exciting stage of sensory and physical development. At this point, the baby’s hearing has become more refined, allowing them to recognize familiar sounds, including the comforting rhythm of the mother’s heartbeat. They can also detect external sounds and may even respond to voices or music. Additionally, the baby is now able to sense changes in light, even though the womb is dark. If a strong light source is placed near the mother’s belly, the baby may turn away or respond with movement.

Taste buds have also fully developed, and the baby is beginning to experience a range of flavors through the amniotic fluid, influenced by the mother’s diet. Internally, the baby’s organs continue to mature, particularly the lungs, which are preparing for the outside world, and the digestive system, which is now capable of some basic functions. Layers of fat are steadily accumulating beneath the skin, helping the baby to regulate body temperature after birth.

The baby exercises daily, kicking, stretching, and making small movements that are often felt by the mother as gentle nudges or even stronger kicks. These movements are crucial for muscle development and joint flexibility, preparing the baby for life outside the womb.

At this stage, if the baby were born prematurely, they would have a fair chance of survival with the help of medical intervention, as many vital systems are developed enough to function with support. By the end of the seventh month, the baby typically measures around 15 inches in length and weighs between 2 and 2½ pounds, marking substantial growth and readiness for the final months of development.
